So we all in work from home mode now, and while it has its own advantages, it might also be uncomfortable for some. Let's face it, we all are struggling with self-discipline more or less, and you can have a hundred bullet points on your to-do list, but then next thing you know you are doing the third load of laundry while binge-watching "How I Met Your Mother".
Here I have gathered tips from writers and just some people I know who have been doing work from home for several years. Crossing fingers it helps (and I speaking on behalf of myself mostly).
Set an alarm
It can be tempting to sleep till afternoon, but you are missing out on your body's productive hours. Do not leave it to the chance, and set up alarm as if you were going to the office. You can give yourself an extra 15 minutes. You are saving time on the commute after all.
Get moving
One of the reasons why you are awake by the time you get to the office is because of your commute. You get to move, and your body "turns on". Freelancers recommend having a 10-minute stretch or jumping jacks routine. Not into it? Why not "get jiggy wit it" and play your favorite tunes as you are making breakfast?
Block out time on your calendar
Block out even routine tasks to keep yourself organized. This way you will have less procrastination and will avoid jumping from one task to another. You will reply to John's email during your 25-minute email session, not when you are in the middle of strategic planning.
Create a workspace
This sounds like Captain Obvious but seriously do this. Even your dinner table will do as long as it is set for success. Get all the notepads, pens & sticky notes ready ahead of time. Pour yourself a cup of joe and work, work, work.
Breath fresh air
Social distancing does not mean you have to lock yourself in four walls. Even 10-15 minutes of sunlight sitting on your porch, terrace, etc. is better than no fresh air at all. You need vitamin D, and you need oxygen.
Connect with people
Even if you are the biggest introvert, soon enough you will miss human contact. Make sure to check on your family and friends. Taco Tuesdays with your work buddies via Zoom?
Close your laptop at the end of your working hours
One more email easily turns into 2 more hours of work. Just as you would leave office on time, make it a priority to work a set number of hours. You will do it all over again the next day. Setting boundaries (with yourself too, missy) is essential.
What are your tips on staying productive when you are working from home?
Stay healthy!
